Who We Are

ASSOCIATION FOR THE PROMOTION AND EXHIBITION OF ARTS IN LEBANON (APEAL)

APEAL was established in 2008 with the express goal of nurturing and promoting artists from Lebanon within an international context. Following a series of successful international exhibitions and the organization of the Lebanese pavilion at the 2013 Venice Biennale, APEAL has been dedicated to the establishment of a Modern and Contemporary art museum on a plot of land in the heart of Beirut.

Committed to the highest international standards of curation, preservation and exhibition, APEAL is in the process of securing a world-class collection of modern and contemporary art from Lebanon and the Lebanese diaspora, which will constitute the core of the Museum's material and identity.

The Museum will be built on a plot of land donated to APEAL by the Université Saint-Joseph (USJ) but will operate independently, under its own governance.

UNIVERSITE SAINT JOSEPH (USJ)

Founded in 1875 with the aim of providing a modern Francophone education to students from Lebanon and the region, the Université Saint Joseph's mission has always been centered around the notion of pluralistic cultural dialogue.

In 1977, the university opened its visionary Institute of Islamo-Christian Studies and in 2010, the Faculty of Letters and Humanities inaugurated its Masters program in Art Criticism and Curatorial Studies. A pioneering initiative in Lebanon, the program has contributed to the formation of the region’s first locally-trained generation of young critics and curators.
